The new AiM SmartyCam is now available in the US. This new solid state device combines high resolution video with a real time data overlay in one package. Essentially replacing the sync’ing and post processing needed for various existing solutions. In addition this device connects to your ECU via the CAN bus, or existing AiM loggers/dashes. All of this functionality is wrapped up in a single solid state hi-resolution video device. Because the unit has built in GPS and accelerometers, it essentially performs the basic data logging functions by itself. However, when used as a slave to a AiM loggers/dashes it can actually provide the GPS signal to the dash as well as use any logged channels. So instead of purchasing the GPS adapter and a camera, just purchase the SmartyCam!
From a technical perspective, the device is impressive. Using h.264 video as well as 720×400 @30 fps results in stunning clarity. The device records onto SD media and can take cards up to 16GB. Record time is greater than 10 hours on a single card.
The SmartyCam comes in two basic flavors; Standalone and Slave. Both units have the tri-axial accelerometer as well as integrated GPS for position and speed data. The Standalone version is just that, a simple all-in-one logger. The unit has an included rechargeable lithium battery so you can install it w/o any external cables. The slave unit is designed to be used in conjunction with an existing logger or dash. In this configuration the SmartyCam can share it’s GPS data with the dash and the dash can share it’s logged channels with the SmartyCam over the CAN bus. The SmartyCam can be connected via the Data Hub if needed as well.
In either configuration the included Smarty Manager software allows for full customization of the displayed dash as well as configuration of channels being presented when running in slave mode.
